ACTIFUEL

ActiFuel is a mobile app that combines activity tracking with personalised nutrition plans. The goal was to help users lead a healthier lifestyle-without overwhelming them with information or forcing them to use multiple tools. The target group includes busy individuals aged 20–45 who want to stay active and eat well but need simplicity, personalization, and motivation.

The challenge

How can we help busy, health-conscious users stay consistent with their workouts and nutrition - without overwhelming them?

Many people start using health apps with good intentions but drop off quickly due to:

  • Fragmented tools (one app for fitness, another for nutrition, etc.)

  • Cluttered interfaces and complex navigation

  • Lack of motivation or real-time personalization

  • Difficulty building and maintaining healthy habits with limited time

The goal: Design a seamless, all-in-one experience that makes healthy living easier, smarter, and actually enjoyable—especially for people who already have a lot on their plate.

The solution

ActiFuel was designed as an all-in-one mobile companion that simplifies healthy living by combining fitness tracking, personalised nutrition, and smart meal planning—all in one intuitive app.

The core of the solution includes:

  • Simple workout tracking with smart reminders and motivation boosters

  • Personalised experience using data-driven suggestions for food and movement

  • Catering integration that lets users order meals aligned with their fitness goals

  • Gamified progress tracking that keeps users engaged without adding pressure

By focusing on personalisation, ease of use, and real-life value, ActiFuel helps users stay consistent without needing multiple apps or complicated routines.

ActiFuel’s brand identity combines clarity, motivation, and trust. It’s designed for people who want to move, grow, and feel better, without needing to juggle multiple apps or do all the planning themselves. The tone is bold but encouraging, expert but approachable. Whether someone’s just starting their fitness journey or trying to stay on track during a busy week, ActiFuel is there to guide, support, and empower every step of the way.

User research

To better understand user needs, motivations, and pain points related to healthy living, a preliminary round of qualitative research was conducted with a small, familiar group—friends, family, and acquaintances. The goal was to gain initial insight into everyday habits, challenges, and attitudes toward physical activity, nutrition, and the tools people use to support a healthy lifestyle.
Participants were asked a range of open-ended questions covering topics such as preferred types of exercise, struggles with consistency, dietary routines, and motivation drivers. We also explored their experience with meal planning, use of fitness or nutrition apps, and their opinions on dietary catering services.

Personas

Let’s meet Michael, Kamil and Magda
- ActiFUEL personas

To ensure the app meets real user needs, I created detailed personas based on research and user interviews. These personas represent key user types and helped guide design decisions by keeping the experience focused, relevant, and human-centered.

Information architecture

At the beginning of the design process, I focused on organizing all the research insights and user needs into a clear, structured framework. This step was essential in shaping the information architecture and helped me understand how users would naturally navigate the app to achieve their goals.

Let’s start with a pencil - sketches

Wireframes

Opening Screen

This is the user’s entry point into the app experience. It’s designed for quick access to what matters most: upcoming workouts and meal tracking. the screen is designed around clarity, simplicity, and user action. It focuses on the essentials, what users need to see and do right now, while maintaining the brand’s motivational tone. Overall, this structure effectively reduces friction, supports habit formation, and encourages users to stay engaged over the long term.

High fidelity

Adding activity

One of the core features of the application is the ability to log completed workouts and schedule upcoming ones. This functionality is introduced on the opening screen, where users have quick access to their most important actions—tracking activities and meals-while staying aware of their overall schedule through an integrated calendar view.

In the extended user flow, the “Add Activity” feature becomes a key interaction. Users can define their workout type and choose whether to log it spontaneously or schedule it on the calendar. Based on the activity data, the app calculates distance, calories burned, and duration. After each session, users receive motivational feedback, along with personalised suggestions, such as reminders to hydrate or increase protein intake to support recovery.

ActiFuel MAX

Another key feature of the application is the option to upgrade to the ActiFuel Max version—a premium, paid plan designed for users who want a more personalized experience. With Max, users gain access to professional support from certified dietitians and personal trainers, who help fine-tune both their nutrition and training plans based on individual goals and progress.

The premium features will be accessible in the user settings, where users can also view a dashboard of their current results, including workout consistency, nutrition data, and overall performance. This section highlights how well the user is progressing in relation to their predefined goals, offering both insight and motivation to stay on track.

Activity list

One of the most valuable aspects of the application is its daily reports and activity summaries, which allow users to quickly assess their ongoing progress. These features provide a clear snapshot of completed workouts, nutritional intake, and hydration levels—helping users stay focused and informed.

Both the Daily Summary and Activity List views are also designed to seamlessly connect with the option of personalized dietary catering, tailored to the user’s current goals and lifestyle. This integration encourages consistent habits by providing a convenient solution for maintaining a balanced diet, directly aligned with the user’s performance data.

ActiFUEL Catering

At its core, the app’s primary function—and main revenue stream—is the sale of personalized dietary catering tailored to the user’s training needs. Users can choose from a variety of diet plans, with flexible pricing tiers, meal types, and delivery options.

Everything is designed to simplify daily life and enhance the nutritional quality of physically active users, helping them stay consistent without the hassle of daily meal planning.

Project Summary

This project confirmed for me that, as always, the devil is in the details. Combining physical activity with accurate, real-time nutritional tracking is not only a UX challenge, it’s a logic and behavior design puzzle. You quickly realize that it’s not just about clean layouts or smart features; it’s about making the complex feel simple for real people, in their everyday lives.

My main takeaway It’s a big idea, one that would definitely require a strong, multidisciplinary team to fully bring to life. There’s still plenty of work ahead in terms of refining flows, testing with real users, and optimizing edge cases. That said, I genuinely enjoyed the process. There were moments of frustration, unexpected turns, and tricky problems, but each one was a learning opportunity, and in most cases, I found a better way forward.
